Nick Gates, Senior Associate, Policy and Research

Nick believes in the power of sustainable and inclusive digital technology to extend good governance, as well as promote social and economic empowerment. He joined DIAL as a Fellow during the Summer of 2019, working on partnerships and the ICT4SDG program, before continuing with the organization as an Associate in April 2020.

Nick has a background working in mixed-methods research, data analysis, project management, and partnership building for digital and grassroots development, with additional international experience in nonprofit advocacy, organizing, and community building. Nick is focused on policy and research supporting digital government and national digital transformation, with a focus on national transformation processes and social inclusion in digital development. In his current role, Nick is responsible for driving a number of key research projects for the Policy Team, as well as helping to manage DIAL policy advocacy and outreach, overseeing the DIAL interns program, and supporting the country team on research and policy. Nick brings forth experience in academic research, business development, and nonprofit advocacy, including research work centered on trade policy and social economy.

He has worked and volunteered in several NGOs in the United States, Denmark, and India. As part of a team working to expand the Fairtrade movement in India, Nick helped expand outreach for the Fairtrade Week 2017 and license the first Fairtrade-certified coffee brand in India. This experience motivated Nick to write his graduate thesis about women’s empowerment in the Fairtrade movement in South India, and later to pursue work on inclusive digital technology in agricultural development. Nick graduated with an MSc in Global Development from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark in 2018, and also holds a dual degree from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, with a BA in Political Science and a BA in History.
